Family Prayer Mission ProfileThe Family Prayer Mission is a lay apostolate, founded in 1989 and
registered with the Archdiocese of Toronto. Our objective: The objective of the organization is to help families to achieve sanctity and
stability, by following the motto: The Family That Prays Together Stays
Together. In other words, families must practice family prayer and grow as
God-centred families. Hence our name “Family Prayer Mission.” The background: There was a fast increase in youth crime in the mid 1980’s. Our observations led us to the conclusion that most of the young people who committed crimes came from broken families. The most ideal solution to this problem was, therefore, to help families live in harmony, with God placed in the center of their life. Prayer is the essential link that puts us in harmony with God and with one another. Therefore we placed our emphasis on Family Prayer On 25 February 1989 twenty-seven lay people and two priests met at 2478
Callum Ave., Mississauga. The meeting was chaired by Rev. Camilo Lando, Pastor
of St. Catherine of Siena Parish Mississauga. It was decided to form a religious
charitable organization called Family Prayer Mission with the objective of
spreading the practice of family prayer. An executive committee was elected; and
Fr. Lando was nominated as the Spiritual Director. At the following meeting a
Constitution was approved. Our first major task was to distribute free of charge thousands of copies of
a Family Prayer Guide. Copies were mailed to every Bishop in Canada and to
several priests in the Toronto and neighboring dioceses, promising them shipment
of additional copies if they asked for. Hundreds of copies were distributed in
several churches. Our publications: After the Family Prayer Guide we published a quarterly
bulletin called Jesus is Alive. After about two years that was discontinued when
Vachanolsavam (the most widely read Catholic magazine) started an English
edition. We then published a book titled “WHO IS JESUS CHRIST? Jesus in the Vedas,
Jesus in the Bible, Jesus in the Qur’an.” This was followed by a little
booklet called “Who is Jesus Christ?” with reference only to the Bible. We still mail copies of these books to those who ask for them by letter,
email or telephone free of charge, donations will gladly be accepted as it will
help to support our work . As Christians each one of us is called to be a witness to Christ, and “to
teach all people to obey everything he has commanded us” (Matthew 28:20). Our
immediate area of witnessing (evangelization) is our own families; then we must
spread the seeds farther and farther, among relatives, friends, neighbors,
co-workers, etc. Membership in the Family Prayer Mission is open to all Christians, aged 18 and over, who believe that marriage is a sacred and permanent institution, and who are willing to promote the objectives of the Mission with their word and deed.
